Svalbard Bound: Three Generations, One Arctic Adventure

This Monday, we're beginning a three-generation trip to Svalbard, Norway, after a short stay in London, England. Our group, originally envisioned as an all-girls endeavor, has now expanded to include my mom, sister-in-law Elizabeth, Emma, Grace, myself, and my brother Todd. As evidenced by his presence with us in New York City this past December, Todd's calm demeanor and patient nature add balance to our family dynamic, enhancing our journey. Hanns and my step-dad Tom will be very much missed on this trip, but we're content knowing they'll be at home, taking care of the house and our pets. I am very grateful that shortly after we return, the sabbatical grant allowed for another family trip on the horizon as Hanns, Emma, Grace, and I are looking forward to visiting Hawaii.

Before my mom was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, she often spoke about wanting to visit Svalbard, Norway. After her diagnosis, her desire to go became stronger, putting it at the top of her bucket list. I researched more about Svalbard and found it to be a unique and beautiful place where we could truly appreciate God's presence in creation.

Svalbard is an archipelago in the Arctic Ocean, close to the North Pole. Most of it is covered by glaciers, and it's home to different wildlife like unique birds, whales, arctic foxes, and reindeer. Some of us are even hopeful we might spot a polar bear.

One key landmark in Svalbard is the Global Seed Vault, a crucial repository for the world's seeds. We will also be there during the season of the year known as the Midnight Sun when the sun doesn't set. We might not have cell service there, something Emma and Grace aren't too happy about, but I see it as a unique opportunity to disconnect and spend quality time together.

Beyond the sites, this journey holds profound personal importance as well - a cherished chance to spend meaningful time with my mom and my family. This is a unique and special time in our family's life. With my girls turning sixteen next year, their interests are expanding, summer jobs are on the horizon, and their social circles are growing, which naturally means they want to spend more time with friends. I'm deeply grateful for these precious moments we get to spend together.

As we prepare for our trip, I ask for your prayers for safe travel and good health. I'm looking forward to sharing our experiences with you.

Embracing Sabbath Rest

On my last full day in Telluride, I was inspired by my off-road adventures with Shelley and wanted to see more natural wonders nearby, so I booked a guided tour with Dave's Mountain Tours. Joining me was a nice couple who were celebrating their honeymoon. On the way to Bridal Veil Falls, we had an exciting jeep ride up the mountain. As we approached the falls, I couldn't help but be amazed by the sheer power and beauty of nature. The water cascaded down the rocky cliffs with an awe-inspiring force, creating a mesmerizing display. Rainbows danced and shimmered in the mist. Standing there, as with all of my encounters with God's creation thus far, I couldn't help but feel a deep sense of connection to the Creator.  Nature has a way of revealing the boundless wonders of our God, inviting us to pause, reflect, and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us.

During my sabbatical so far, I have realized how challenging it can be to truly pause and embrace rest and reflection. As a pastor, the responsibilities of ministry and the persistent drive for productivity can overshadow the inherent need for stillness and connection with God. However, this valuable time away has illuminated the significance of embracing Sabbath rest. Only when we deliberately detach ourselves and “unplug” can we wholeheartedly immerse ourselves in the presence of God. Surrounded by the awe-inspiring wonders of God's creation, I find peace and the ability to achieve this state of being.

In the pursuit of extended rest, I am learning to stop the need for constant busyness and performance. It is in those moments of quiet solitude that we can experience our true selves, stripped away from the pressures of productivity and the expectations we place upon ourselves. It is through this vulnerability and openness that we can encounter God in profound ways.

My friend Shelley reminded me that sabbath days, which I aim to take on Fridays, are meant for being with God, for reviving our spirits and souls. It is not about accomplishing tasks or checking off to-do lists. During an ideal sabbath, we can let go of our striving and rest in the unconditional love that God offers.

As my sabbatical journey continues, I am committed to cultivating more intentional moments of rest and connection with God. I am reminded that the true essence of sabbath lies in surrendering our need to make things happen and instead finding solace in simply being. My prayer is that my sabbatical is truly a season of renewal, where I can truly rest and allow God's presence to revive my body, mind, and soul.
