🎶 God of the sparrow, God of the whale.
God of the swirling stars.
How does the creature say Awe?
How does the creature say Praise? 🎶
We awoke in Isfjord Radio, a historic radio station perched on the edge of Svalbard's wilderness. It’s the only structure for miles around. Once a vital communication hub, it has transformed into a cozy hotel that preserves the charm of its past. The comfy living rooms, rustic décor, and the warmth of the staff created an inviting atmosphere, connecting us to the rich history of this remote outpost. The restaurant here, where we have had unique and wonderful dinners, was recently featured on National Geographic’s “Restaurants at the End of the World.”
As we sailed, seals and walruses were occasionally seen gracefully swimming by, reminding us of the adaptability and resilience of Arctic creatures. We also got to see a walrus colony in a fjord. The true highlight, however, was the majestic fin whales, gliding through the waters with effortless grace. As we scanned the horizon, suddenly flocks of birds would gather on the water's surface. Soon, a distinct spout of water would emerge, signaling the presence of these magnificent creatures. As we witnessed their presence, the hymn “God of the Sparrow, God of the whale” resonated in my heart, reminding me of the interconnectedness of all creatures and their unique ways of expressing awe and praise. "How does the creature say awe? How does the creature say praise?"
With a flick of its enormous tail and each majestic blow of water into the air, the fin whales’ graceful movements and the power within their magnificent bodies stirred a sense of awe within us. They offered a unique symphony of praise along with the swirling stars above and the intricate web of life that surrounds us. It brought to mind the thought that each creature, from the sparrow to the whale, bears witness to the splendor and majesty of God's handiwork, teaching us to recognize and appreciate the diverse ways in which all of creation exclaims its reverence and adoration.
Ivar told us that we were fortunate enough to witness not only their distinctive blows but also catch a glimpse of a massive tail. A whale showing its tale is a sight rarely seen. The rarity and privilege of such an encounter is something that I hope I will always remember. Every encounter with God’s creatures is such a sacred gift.

This looks like a great place to go sailing. I’ll add it to my bucket list. Looks like “long johns” will be the sartorial requirement of the trip!
